Benedict Arnold. Bill Bellicheck. Steve Smith. What do all three have in common? They all betrayed New York. Former Giant star possession receiver Steve Smith has decided to betray his fans and his team and sign a one year $4 million dollar ($2 million guaranteed) deal with the hated rival Philadelphia Eagles.
Smith wrote on his facebook page to address his former adoring fans, "
Smith was then bombarded with over a thousand comments, almost all showing hostility to their former Giants icon. One fan wrote, " I don't wanna hear that nonsense...stabbed all of us in the back and pierced our hearts...of all people......the damn eagles, good lord." That basically says it all.
Some fans were more forgiving, one wrote, "Well Steve you can't please everyone, and your true fans will b your fans no matter who you play for.....keep representing and doing your thing, and the haters well they just make you greater!, so keep pushing forward and key the haters hate!!!! We welcome you to the EAGLES with open arms!"
Smith believes the Giants did not offer him a large enough contract, the Giants most likely did not offer him such due to concerns of his durability and his surgically repaired left knee. The injury is presumed to sideline Smith for another 4-6 weeks.
I would like to be happy for Steve, I would like to be mature about this situation and realize this was a business decision. I would like to, but I can't. As a true diehard Giants fan I can not and will not wish Steve well with the Eagles. Do I hope he gets injured? No, but do I hope he has a bad season and his Eagles go on to falter even with all their talent? Hell yea!
